Indispensable to Human Existence

Living in China has really opened my eyes as far as learning languages and culture.
In around April, the Dutch Consulate got in touch with me & asked if I would be interested to join a cultural exchange where several Dutch creatives would be able to show their portfolio, brands & ideas etc.
I took this chance to hold a presentation in Chinese to tell about who I am, my brand & show some of my products.
Since my stay in China is close related to the design of my logo, I explained it. But I will give a more detailed, visual post on that.

Respectively, I also elaborated on the “Wu Xing” clothing series I designed.
“Wu Xing” literally means “Five Elements” in Chinese. It indeed has been inspired by that.
One of the characteristics of my logo is that everyone’s perception is different.
A great example are these “Five Elements” since in the Greek belief, there are four elements. But in China, it consists out of five.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal & Water.

According to Chinese history, they are the most essential materials indispensable to human existence.
The meaning derives from the following:

The five elements grow together:

  • Metal generates Water;
  • Water generates Wood;
  • Wood generates Fire;
  • Fire generates Earth;
  • Earth generates Metal.

Contrasting that the elements overcome each other as well:

  • Metal conquers Wood;
  • Wood conquers Earth;
  • Earth conquers Water;
  • Water conquers Fire;
  • Fire conquers Metal.

Inspired by this, I created a line of T-Shirts for each element.
The series relate back to it’s original number, 5.
It has 5 colors, 1 for each element.
Each color has 5 sizes, and there’s 5 of each size.
Because of distribution, this series has only been promoted in China so far.

Everything starts with an idea, a thought. Like a little seed planted in the human brain or in its heart. If you listen to it and are brave enough to follow that idea, and let it grow. That idea can be the beginning of something very beautiful.

Since I was in the beautiful Metropolis of Chongqing, I couldn’t leave without having taken a few nice shots of the city and its surroundings, hope you enjoy:

Space exhibition

My first official solo photo-exhibition.

In December 2019, a few months before COVID hit the planet I had my first small photo- exhibition as a contribution to a Christmas market in Guiyang, Guizhou province, China.

It was decided very last minute and my first time doing this. I went to a printshop I actually printed a photo as a present once which turned out very well. With that experience, I decided to let them print some of the photos I quickly chose to try out and see, how would those turn out on paper, in a frame and how would people react on actual printed photos instead of just online photos. Even though it was all arranged very last minute from my side, I got an amazing response and people from around the whole city were interested.

This was personally the first trigger for me to work harder and get my work out there. And the next thing I wanted to do was, organize a proper photo-exhibition. But to be honest, I took it slow. I went to a few places to consider holding an exhibition And then in April 2020; I remember I met up with a Chinese friendof mine and he introduced me to the boss of a very nice coffeeshop called “Postman”. He was open for ideas and suggested me to first make a plan, and then we could talk further. Although this was in the back of my head, I didn’t have the time to work on my plan yet.

Then a few months later on a nice evening, the weather wasn’t too cold yet, we drove the usual way home from downtown to our district. We suddenly saw a logo and some lights on the edge of a mountain on the road we were passing. Curiously we thought to ourselves, let’s check it out! It was more of a community, meeting place kindo f coffeeshop. We loved the place, the interior, the vibes but also the people. We instantly became friends and I told them about my plan to hold an exhibition. They immediately started talking business, which I got surprised with but, in the end, it did help me get that push to organize and build a plan.

The exhibition was supposed to last for one week but on the last day, I held a seminar about my story and vision as a content creator. And the shop decided to extend it for another week. Not only because of COVID people couldn’t come but also because I have lots of friends and families back home and/or in other countries. Therefore I would like to give you a short glimpse of how the exhibition looked like through this VR tour that I have made. See video

If you have any questions/remarks, do not hesitate to get in touch with me!

Enjoy!

The Endless Exploration

After having a small exhibition part of a marketsale / christmas market in 2019, my work started gaining more interest.I slowly decided I wanted to organize my own independent photo-exhibition where I could showcase my work and message behind my work.

The message is: “Even though everyone’s perception on things are different, the world is open for everyone to explore freely. Whether it being through photography, videography, music, culture, architecture or any form of art. And it is exactly that, that inspires thorcaes. To document the different cultures, sub-cultures and ways of thinking. Where there is a will, there is a way.”

Around september 2020, my girlfriend and I were driving back home from work. But, we were driving slower than usual.While driving, we saw an interesting logo and a place that was lit up a little bit on a mountain we passed by daily.The logo and lights gained our interest so we went to have a look. We ended up spending a few hours, realising how beautiful the place actually is and talking to the owners.I told them about my photography and they were very interested. Eventually we decided to work on something together and that’s where the photo-exhibition started.

Very thankful for the owners of Space (肆喜) in Guiyang to have given me this opportunity.

Even though I was very excited to finally realise this opportunity. It was very stressful as well.Because not only did I organise a photo-exhibition, I also organised a seminar about my products and some basics of photography.During organising the exhibition, I was also working full-time and working on a few other projects. (One of them being new lines of clothing/merchandise that will be released on the website early next year.)

Since it would be my first time holding a seminar in another language than Dutch or English, I was very nervous.In the end, it was an amazing experience and we’re definitely looking forward to working together again in the near future.

For now, I’d like to share at least the series of photos I’ve presented during the exhibition. So that especially for the people who couldn’t be there, you can still be there. And for the people who could be there, you can relive it.
It’s the first time I’ve made a tour like this, so I hope you enjoy the tour.
